Environmental studies is a broadly defined discipline that includes ecology, geology, geography, land and water management, policy, and law. The Environmental Science tracks in the Biology and Earth Sciences departments at Syracuse University provide a combination of rigorous scientific training and considerable flexibility for students to concentrate on an area of environmental science of particular interest. A study in the October 1997 Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America ranked SU's Biology Department's ecology/evolution programs second in the nation for the overall quality of scientific research published by faculty, and eighth in the nation in scientific productivity per faculty member among the top 63 programs at major universities. Despite the small number of Biology faculty specializing in ecology and evolution (compared to other universities), our program outranked in both quality and productivity national research universities with 10-20 times the number of faculty.
Graduates of the program have gone on to graduate study, government, and environmental consulting and law.
