The Program

Environmental studies is a broadly defined discipline that includes ecology, geology, geography, land and water management, policy, and law. The Environmental Science tracks in the Biology and Earth Sciences departments at Syracuse University provide a combination of rigorous scientific training and considerable flexibility for students to concentrate on an area of environmental science of particular interest. A study in the October 1997 Bulletin of the Ecological Society of America ranked SU's Biology Department's ecology/evolution programs second in the nation for the overall quality of scientific research published by faculty, and eighth in the nation in scientific productivity per faculty member among the top 63 programs at major universities. Despite the small number of Biology faculty specializing in ecology and evolution (compared to other universities), our program outranked in both quality and productivity national research universities with 10-20 times the number of faculty.

Students studying on the quadBiology and Earth Science majors focusing on Environmental Science are each required to take core courses in their respective departments, as well as introductory classes in the other natural science department (biology or earth science) for a broad-based scientific background necessary to address environmental issues. Students then select courses in earth science, biology, geography, civil and environmental engineering, or policy to satisfy upper division requirements. A field course (Bio/Gol 485: Geology and Ecology of Regional Environments) is also offered. A required senior-year Capstone seminar brings biologists and earth scientists together to discuss and analyze current environmental issues from a wide range of perspectives.

Graduates of the program have gone on to graduate study, government, and environmental consulting and law.
